How to play Five Letters
A hidden word is waiting. You have six guesses to find it. Type a real word and press Enter. Each tile then shows how close you are:
- Green means the letter is right and in the right place.
- Yellow means the letter is in the word, but in a different place.
- Grey means the word has no more copies of that letter.
The keyboard remembers what you learned, so you can avoid letters you already ruled out. If green and yellow are hard to tell apart, turn on Colour-blind. It swaps them for orange and blue.
Daily and Practice
Daily is one puzzle a day, the same for everyone. You get one try. A new puzzle starts at midnight in your own time zone. Puzzle number 1 was 17 October 2026. Win on back-to-back days to build a streak.
Practice gives you a new random word whenever you like. You can pick 4, 5, 6 or 7 letters. You still get six guesses.
Hard mode
In hard mode every hint you uncover must be used. Green letters stay where they are. Yellow letters must show up again. You cannot play a throwaway word just to test new letters, so it is a real test.
Tips
- Start with common letters. E, A, R, O, T, L, I, S and N turn up most. A first word with five different letters from that list is a strong start.
- Make your second word different. If SLATE gets nothing, try CHOIR next. Two guesses then test ten different letters.
- Know double letters. Green letters are counted first. After that, a letter turns yellow only if the word still has an unmatched copy. Guess SPEED against ABIDE: the first E is yellow and the second E is grey, because ABIDE has only one E.
- Watch for word families. Words like _IGHT or _ATCH have many answers. If three letters are green and you are unsure, guess a word that mixes the possible first letters instead of trying them one at a time.
